7 lifestyle habits that damage collagen

7 lifestyle habits that damage collagen

The body makes less collagen from the mid-twenties onwards. Some everyday habits speed that loss up. Here are seven of them, with what to do instead.

1. Unprotected sun exposure

Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen in the skin and is the largest outside cause of skin ageing. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and cover up in strong sun.

2. Smoking

Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and damages collagen and elastin. Stopping is the single most useful change a smoker can make for their skin.

3. A diet high in added sugar

Excess sugar in the blood can bind to collagen fibres, a process called glycation, which makes them stiffer. Keep added sugar low.

4. Too little protein

The body builds collagen from amino acids in the diet. Eat protein at each meal from foods such as dal, eggs, fish, chicken, paneer and curd.

5. Too little vitamin C

Vitamin C is needed to make collagen. Amla, guava, citrus fruits and peppers are good sources.

6. Poor sleep

Sleep is when much of the body's repair happens. Aim for seven to nine hours on a regular schedule.

7. Heavy drinking

Regular heavy drinking dehydrates the skin and is linked to poorer skin health overall. Keep alcohol moderate.

Where a supplement fits

A collagen supplement can be part of a daily routine, alongside these habits. It does not undo sun damage or smoking.
