What collagen does in the body, and what a supplement can do

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It gives skin its firmness, and it is part of the structure of bone, cartilage, tendon and ligament. This article covers what collagen does, why the body makes less of it over time, and what a supplement can and cannot do.

What collagen does

Collagen fibres give tissue strength under tension. In skin they sit in the dermis, the layer beneath the surface, and contribute to firmness and elasticity. In joints, collagen is part of cartilage. In tendons and ligaments it makes up most of the dry weight.

Why levels fall with age

The body makes its own collagen. Production slows gradually from the mid-twenties onwards. Sun exposure, smoking and a diet low in protein or vitamin C can speed up the loss.

What a supplement can do

Hydrolyzed collagen is broken into short peptides that dissolve in hot or cold drinks. Most studies of collagen supplements have measured skin elasticity and hydration over eight to twelve weeks, with modest results that vary from person to person. A supplement provides raw material. It does not replace sleep, sun protection, enough protein and a varied diet.

How to take it

Take the serving stated on the pack once a day, in water or a drink you already have. Consistency matters more than timing.
